What are mucous membranes in fish?
The mucous membranes on outer surfaces are the fish's primary protection against disease and a demanding environment. The mucus protects in three ways:
How is this done in practice?
We have developed measurement methods for skin, gills and intestines. The sampling equipment is standardized and can be ordered from us. Sampling can easily be done by fish health professionals or people at the facility. Quantidoc can assist with training if needed.
Based on 5-10 representative samples from a fish group, Quantidoc uses its technology to provide an objective indicator of robustness. Our results predict the fish's robustness and its potential for further development and growth.
Who is behind the technology?
Basic research from the University of Bergen provides the basis for Quantidoc AS. The technology sets an objective target number on the strength of the mucosa. The method is now used on 9 species, on 3 types of mucus barriers (skin, gills, intestines) in several countries. The measurements are compared with other previous measurements in our database. This provides valuable knowledge that can help farmers and fish health professionals make even better choices for the fish's health and thereby improve production.
Why do you need to know the strength of the mucosa?
Good health is an important value in the production of fish. Intensive farming has challenges around handling, pharmaceuticals, husbandry and feeding regimes. Quantidoc now offers a production management tool to safeguard and enhance fish health. Our proprietary software measures the area and density of mucus cells. Based on this we can give early warning of the status of the mucosa. This provides the opportunity to take action before lost growth and mortality occur. Regular measurements provide better knowledge.
Contact us for input on your needs: We do stand-alone samplings, subscriptions over time, surveillance and projects. We also co-operate with other suppliers of analytical services.
Our technology is Veribarr. With Veribarr you guard the front line of the fish, so you can defend your bottom line and protect your values!

- A physical barrier - even just a few hundred millimeters is sufficient to protect.
- A magazine for dozens of antimicrobial components that kill viruses, bacteria and fungi.
- A natural substrate for the good microflora that the fish need to survive
